With their current capitulation, the Democrats have again proven to me what I already knew. That a politician, no matter what they say to your face, is always seeking to maintain power. Common good be damned the Democratic Congress has just voted to give ALBERTO GONZALES more power over warrantless wiretapping. Nevermind that there was already a law in the books known as FISA which clearly makes what Bush was doing ILLEGAL!!! Faced with the awful prospect of no SUMMER F*ING VACATION the Dems gave in to Bush and gave him exactly what he wanted. But that's not all. Dems were actually scared that they would be portrayed as weak on national security if they refused to give more power to a man that has committed blatant, politcal, self-serving perjury before Congress. The same man who crafted a legal opinion that supported the use of TORTURE on KIDNAPPED international citizens. They actually thought that giving this despicable human being legitimate spying powers was in the interest of national security. HELLLLLLOOO!!! This president has ZERO credibility anymore with the American people. A majority of Americans just want him the hell out. Why do they have any reason to believe what Bush says anymore? But why stop at Bush? Why do Americans have any reason to believe what the Beltway pundits say anymore? (I know you stopped believing them decades ago. Just bear with me while I make my point) It was the Mainstream Media that lied us into Iraq. Unfortunately for our republic, our representatives seem to think that Americans give a rat's ass about what some gas bag like Broder spews. Americans expect THEIR representative to listen to THEIR concerns and work for the common good of the country. The people overwhelmingly oppose this war and this administration. This fact is crystal clear.
Why then do our representatives time and again refuse to act in ours, or the common good's best interests? The answer is clear. Our representatives do not I repeat DO NOT listen to one word from their constituents. If they did, then why did they fund the surge? Why is Gonzales still attorney general? Why haven't Bush and Cheney been impeached? WHY ARE WE STILL FIGHTING THIS ABOMINABLE WAR???
The Greeks had a simple system for how long their representatives stayed in office. Once a member was elected, they stayed in office until the people decided that they were not representing their views. A recall would be held and if the representative failed the recall, then they were removed from office. This system placed the representative in a constant state of accountability to their constituents. I would propose this system in our House of Representatives. This would solve the problem of members having to campaign constantly to keep their spot. As long as they pleased their constituents, then the Representative would not have to worry about being recalled. After all, this was the Founders' intent for the House of Representatives, that they would represent their regional interests fervently. The Senate should remain as is, and serve as a proper check to the sometimes volatile will of the people. The Senate would act in its intended role as a negotiator between the national interests of the President and the regional interests of the House.
But how can this change happen in our current system? (You might ask) Your guess is as good as mine amigo. Like I said in the beginning of this post, a politician is always interested in maintaining power. My history prof said that the greatest miracle of the early American nation was when George Washington willfully gave up his power as President. Today George Washington's are few and far between. As a start we CITIZENS need to remind our representatives in Washington exactly who they work for. Call them, E-mail them, Fax them, Write them. Show them that you care, and that you're watching...
